Jesus’ Peace

Isaiah 9:6

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

One of the important aspects of our Advent sermon series is that we take a deep dive into the importance of the coming of Jesus seeing it through the eyes of the characters of the Christmas story. That means our weekend services are filled with non-Advent readings and songs of the church. Singing “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” always warms up cold December days.

Sunday in our readings, we read through the prophecy of Isaiah 9. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will upon his shoulder and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Jesus comes as the Prince of Peace. He comes to bring God’s love and hope and joy to His people. He comes to calm the hearts of God’s children.

We see that peace and calm in the great church hymn that we sing every Christmas Eve, “Silent Night.”

Silent night! holy night!
All is calm all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace!

Silent night! holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia
Christ the Saviour is born!

Silent night! holy night!
Son of God love’s pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord at thy birth.
